THE CITY

Loneliness lives in the city
The yellow eyes of shop windows leer
At the people, a grey entity
In these yellow eyes, a glimmer queer
Retains cigarette smoke clutching the air
Leaving no room for pity
Leaving only the empty stare
Of the blank gaze of the city
The streets brim with downcast eyes
So many people there
No time for greetings or goodbyes
No time or room to care
It’s the way of the city
Each flat is a world
And nothing can men share
But walls and seats, on subways streets and
Eye contact is rare
But one has to like the city,
if one wants to disappear
Be lost to that enormity
Undefined, unclear
No one looks your way,
No words you have to say,
Just be part of the city
Just be part of today.
