Is there something that you think about eating morning, noon, and night? Something that is so unique and appetizing that you can’t wait for the next chance to dig in?! For me it’s a giant bowl of ramen! Not just any kind of ramen, ESPECIALLY not the instant ones that you get 3 for a dollar at the store. I’m talking about the REAL STUFF!
When I first laid eyes on that ornately decorated porcelain ramen bowl, I had no idea that it was the beginning of a lifelong obsession for the noodle.
Did you know that ramen began in Japan almost 100 years ago at the start of the 20th Century? Since then, there have been many variations established throughout the world. There’s 4 types: Shio, Tonkotsu, Shoyu, and Miso soup bases. My personal favorite is Shoyu style.
This is perfection: A steamy bowl of thick, al dente noodles, soaking in a hot broth of shoyu soup. All around it, you’ll find a variety of shapes, colors and textures. Imagine! A perfectly cooked soft boiled egg cut into halves; 2 slices of tender, braised pork; slivers of juicy bamboo shoots; freshly cut glistening spinach, slices of plump, pink, sweet fish cake, crisp and flaky sheets of dried seaweed, garnished with chopped green onion, and a dash of white pepper. YUM! YUM!
If you think I’m being ridiculous, that’s okay. There are plenty of people who think just like me! Ramen is super-popular around the world. There’s even a ramen museum in Yokohama, Japan. Last season, the ramen burger made it’s debut in New York City and even made it’s way to L.A. last month. People stood in line for 4 hours and still didn’t get a bite. Next time, I’ll camp out because NO RAMEN, NO LIFE!
